How to know if your copy of Windows is genuine

In an effort to reduce piracy, Microsoft created the “Advantages of Original Windows” program. WGA (for its acronym in English) allows the user to verify that their Windows (and other Microsoft programs, such as Microsoft Office) are a legally obtained copy. Microsoft provides a Windows Advantage validation service on your website. If a copy of Windows is not original, you can disable some features and periodically notify the user that they need to obtain a legal version of the operating system.

Step 1

Open Internet Explorer and go to the original Microsoft Software website, http://www.microsoft.com/Genuine/. Even if you do not use Internet Explorer as your default browser, since you will need it in this case to validate your operating system.

Step 2

Click on the “Validate Windows” button, located in the “Validate now” box on the left side of the page.

Step 3

If your browser notifies you that some components related to Advantages of Original Windows are going to be installed, click on the “Install” button. You will only have to do it once.

Step 4

A message that says: “Validation in progress” should appear briefly while Microsoft validates your copy of Windows. If it is true, then a message will appear thanking you for using original Microsoft software, and you can close the window.
